What size chain do i need for my BMX bike?
BMX chains come in 2 different styles and 2 different sizes.
Most freestyle BMX bikes will take 1/8" chains and BMX race bikes will take 3/32” chains. This size is the internal width between the two chain plates.
What type of chain do i need for my BMX?
The other difference is whether to get a normal full link chain or a half link chain. A normal BMX chain is made with inner and outer plates and so can only be adjusted by removing both parts of the link. A half link BMX chain has bent links to go from inner to outer and this provides greater adjustability. Most regular chains will come with one half link to also provide fine adjustment.
When choosing the chain it is worth bearing in mind although half link chains will generally be slightly stronger or resilient to being bashed but they are also heavier than regular chains. Street BMX riders will generally want to go with a heavier stronger chain. Park BMX riders looking to save on weight may want to consider going for a more lightweight BMX chain and look at the full link chains. With regular full link chains there are two standard levels of quality to choose from, either 410 or 510 with the latter being slightly stronger and lighter.
